Reasons to Install a Skylight in Your Home

by Frank Lynch

Installing a skylight allows more sunshine to stream into a house. Consider the following reasons for establishing one in your place.

Extra Natural Daylight

The main benefit of skylight windows is that they allow more daylight to flow inside and create a brighter ambience. Seeing the sky and clouds or a starry night can lift spirits. You can take advantage of clear blue skies in summer and bring beautiful weather into your home. In winter, a brighter home will help to relieve the gloom. While you may pay a lot to renovate and enhance your home with new flooring or freshly painted walls, these things can lose their appeal in a dim or closed house. Nothing improves the ambience of a place like ample daylight.

Energy Efficient Home

Many homes require artificial lighting even during the day. When you think about it, this is a waste of energy with daylight freely flowing outside. By installing a skylight, you can use natural illumination and save on your lighting bills. Your house will be more energy-efficient and more appealing should you decide to sell it. Plus, you'll reduce your carbon footprint.

Better Ventilation

By opening a skylight, you allow fresh air to circulate around your home. In the evening, after a hot summer day, you'll be able to freshen up the house. A skylight can help you to get the circulation going even when there's hardly any breeze. Because hot air naturally climbs upwards, it will gravitate towards the ceiling and skylight and drift outside. The exiting air will cause a vacuum effect in the house. Because of this, an open vertical window at a lower level will automatically suction air in from outside. Voila! You've created a circular airflow without using fans, even when it's relatively still outside. Vertical windows or doors at the same level can't take advantage of the natural propensity of warm air to rise.

Spaciousness

You might not want to go down the route of pushing out walls in your home and undergoing major construction to make it bigger. However, you can create a sense of space simply by installing one or several skylights. With extra daylight, rooms tend to feel larger. The skylight will break up the solid ceiling and offer an extended view, which will also evoke spaciousness. And you can create this effect without relocating any walls.

So, there are several reasons for installing a skylight window. By creating a brighter home, you can turn off light switches and save energy. Your home will be fresher with natural ventilation. Plus, the rooms will feel larger and more welcoming with the extra daylight, even on gloomy winter days.

About Me

Choosing the Right Material For a Construction Project

If you are planning to start a new construction project, you may be wondering about the best type of materials to use. About 6 months ago, I decided to carry out an extensive renovation of my home. This would involve demolishing one wall, extending the kitchen and the construction of a new patio area. I really wasn't sure which materials would be best. I consulted with a contractor and he explained the pros and cons of each material. In the end, I opted for wood and steel. I am really pleased with the end results. I hope this blog helps you to plan your construction project.
